Product Number 1008 The Medpage ST-2 is a British patented monitor designed primarily to detect and raise an alarm from a sleeping person experiencing regular muscular convulsions such as an epileptic seizure or convulsions caused by hypoglycaemia in a diabetic person. The ST-2 monitor uses patented technology that provides dual detection functionality, seizure monitoring and bed occupancy detection. A sensor is placed under the users mattress, bed or cot. During sleep movements from the patient are monitored by the ST-2 microprocessor. Prolonged irregular movements result in an alarm being generated by the monitor with a signal transmitted to the alarm pager or other alarm in use with the ST-2 monitor. The alarm transmitter has many functions that are useful for patient care. In addition to providing alarm signals from the Medpage ST-2, the transmitter has a call button and a socket that allows connection of standard hospital type nurse call switch and some specialist easy operation switches for the physically disabled. The transmitter has built in tone alarms that can be set to produce a sound alarm when a bed seizure monitor has detected a seizure or the person leaving their bed. BED OCCUPANCY ALARM The ST-2 sensor, in most cases, can detect the presence of the patient in their bed. The sensor continually monitors small movements that occur during sleep or when resting on the bed. These small movements are processed and used to hold off the alarm. If the patient leaves their bed, within 20 seconds an alarm transmission is sent to the alarm pager or other alarm device in use with the ST-2 monitor. There are some types of bed and mattresses that can affect reliability of the bed occupancy alarm, mainly memory foam mattresses. The seizure detection capabilities of the monitor are not usually affected by bed or mattress types. The bed occupancy alarm can be deactivated if not required or if the sensor is affected by the bed type.
