A common theme you will find throughout all the various websites and agencies supporting dementia care is the importance of keeping someone with dementia in familiar surroundings for as long as possible, particularly during the early and middle stages of dementia when potential risks associated with living at home / living alone can be managed and quality of daily living maintained safely. This approach supports what is known as independent living, allowing a person to stay in their home and possibly live alone in familiar surroundings for as long as possible. Independent living for dementia patients is made much easier and safer today thanks to a wide range of assistive technology products which have been developed to support dementia patients and their carers. There are a range of products that can help by providing simple reminders – such as the medication reminder which is programmed to play a voice reminder at set times or the memrabel dementia care clock which is also programmable as a medication reminder as well as using a voice reminder for meal times or perhaps to telephone a family member. This product also shows a graphical image to indicate medication, food, phone etc. Wandering - confusion about where they are can cause a person with dementia to wander. There are some products available to help prevent this situation arising which we will cover in part 2, but here we will focus on assistive technology products that can assist in locating someone who has wandered. The personal tracker phone will transmit GPS co-ordinates to allow the person to be easily located using google maps and an option to track their route is also available, so you can keep a constant track of location. These handy unit can be tracked using a smart phone or i-phone too. The phone also features a large SOS button and a host of other features. The mini tracker is also packed with useful features to track the location of someone with dementia, but also features a "perimeter" setting which activates an alarm to warn when the person being monitored is about to stray beyond a preset boundary.
